LOOK Show 2017 – worth a first, second and third LOOK

Following on my resolution to get more involved with the arts scene in Victoria, I joined the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria (CACGV).  I really like the CACGV (though the acronym is a mouthful) since their website is very informative, as are their e-newsletters.  Art shows and events are easy to find out about and their online application process is extremely simple and streamlined.  You can even print labels for your artwork with a built-in app on their website! The first show I decided to take part in was the 18th Annual LOOK Show which runs March 25 – April 15, 2017 in...

Small Expressions 2017 – ArtSea Gallery

Following up with my New Year’s Resolution of joining art groups in the Victoria area, I joined two different, but closely related organizations: the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society (SPAC) and the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula (CACSP), now being rebranded as ‘ArtSea’ which is far less of a mouthful to say!  So what is the difference between the two groups?  SPAC is a ‘social club’ of over 300+ members of fine artists and artisans which has been around over 60 years.  ArtSea (CACSP) is a not-for-profit organization who can apply for and give out grants to the...

“Clay Studio – Methods of Making” exhibition at Coast Collective Art Centre

Now that my studio was completely renovated, I started working on my New Year’s Resolution – joining fine art groups in Victoria.  The first one on my list was the Coast Collective Art Centre which I had learned about while buying art supplies at Opus Art Supplies.  I was looking for a group of artists who were interested in actively promoting and selling their work.  I went to Colwood to check it out and found it was conveniently (for me) located by Lee Valley Tools.  After talking with some of the artists, I took the plunge and signed up as an Associate member.  This let me not only...

Before and After – My New West Coast Studio

Last autumn, my family did the big forever move across the country to Victoria, British Columbia.  We purchased a 30 year old house that had been recently renovated – well, two-thirds of it had been renovated.  My husband’s uncle joked that we had bought a ‘million dollar fixer-upper’ since we decided to do the last of the renovations ourselves (with no little help from Uncle B).  The two main culprits were the laundry room and the room above the garage – these had been left in their vintage 1984 state, along with the smell of a chain smoker.  My husband tackled the laundry room; I took on...

Art in Public Spaces – FASM Mural at the Velodrome

The Fine Arts Society of Milton (FASM) was invited by the City of Milton to contribute to a composite mural which was to be hung in the new Mattamy National Cycling Centre.  The velodrome is being built on farm land adjacent to the escarpment and the new housing developments by Tremaine and Derry Road for the 2015 Pan Am games.  Milton has long been a home to cyclists – both road and mountain.  The many sideroads winding through the beautiful escarpment country are often filled with road cyclists and long-distance races.  And Kelso gives mountain bikers the opportunity to hurl themselves...
