Westridge Collection and Westshore Studio Tour 2017

The Westshore Studio Tour took place over the Mother’s Day weekend and showcased both artists from the Westshore area (Colwood, Langford, View Royal, Metchosin, and the Highlands) and also artists who were members at Coast Collective.  I wasn’t able to take part in the Studio Tour as my family was visiting Tofino and Ucluelet for a long weekend (a Mother’s day present to both me and my mother-in-law).  However, the Westridge Collection gallery turnover for May coincided with the Studio Tour, so I brought in two of my encaustic mosaics to be displayed so visitors from the tour would see them....

SPAC Members Spring Show 2017

The Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society (SPAC) held their annual Spring Members Show on the last weekend in April at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney.  This was a busy weekend for our family, since not only was my daughter singing with her school choir at the Mary Winspear Centre as well, but I also was registered to run the Time Colonist 10K Race early Sunday morning.  Plus my son had his ball hockey game in Langford (opposite direction) – lots of driving and coordinating of activities! SPAC runs their Spring Show very efficiently.  Members need to put in at least six hours of...

Point of View Challenge 2017 – Evening in Aviero

I joined the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society (SPAC) in the New Year, just squeaking through the deadline to become a member and be able to take part in the annual Members’ Spring Show.  As a lead up to the big show, SPAC chooses a photograph to be used as inspiration for this year’s ‘Point of View’ (PoV) challenge.  As stated in the Art Chat newsletter, “You are encouraged to use this photo as inspiration to make wonderful art. Paint, draw, sculpt, collage, sew, glue; on paper, fabric, canvas, wood, plastic; in any interpretation. We look forward to seeing innovative, exciting,...

LOOK Show 2017 – worth a first, second and third LOOK

Following on my resolution to get more involved with the arts scene in Victoria, I joined the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria (CACGV).  I really like the CACGV (though the acronym is a mouthful) since their website is very informative, as are their e-newsletters.  Art shows and events are easy to find out about and their online application process is extremely simple and streamlined.  You can even print labels for your artwork with a built-in app on their website! The first show I decided to take part in was the 18th Annual LOOK Show which runs March 25 – April 15, 2017 in...

Small Expressions 2017 – ArtSea Gallery

Following up with my New Year’s Resolution of joining art groups in the Victoria area, I joined two different, but closely related organizations: the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society (SPAC) and the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula (CACSP), now being rebranded as ‘ArtSea’ which is far less of a mouthful to say!  So what is the difference between the two groups?  SPAC is a ‘social club’ of over 300+ members of fine artists and artisans which has been around over 60 years.  ArtSea (CACSP) is a not-for-profit organization who can apply for and give out grants to the...
