Following up with my New Year’s Resolution of joining art groups in the Victoria area, I joined two different, but closely related organizations: the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society (SPAC) and the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula (CACSP), now being rebranded as ‘ArtSea’ which is far less of a mouthful to say! So what is the difference between the two groups? SPAC is a ‘social club’ of over 300+ members of fine artists and artisans which has been around over 60 years. ArtSea (CACSP) is a not-for-profit organization who can apply for and give out grants to the community for arts-related events. They both host art shows and work to promote artists in the Saanich Peninsula, so I thought it best to join both!
ArtSea has a lovely gallery space located in Tulista Park in Sidney, BC. It is right beside the ocean, and there is a beautiful walking promenade which goes all along the waterfront. Of course, in the middle of March the weather is tad unpredictable and during both of my scheduled volunteer times at the ArtSea gallery, it was windy and rainy with dramatic waves crashing on the breakwater. For the month of March, the art show “Small Expressions” runs in the ArtSea gallery – the only condition for submitting up to three pieces of arts/crafts is that they had to be under 12 x 12 inches in size. I submitted three of my small encaustic mosaics (10 x 10 inches) to the show.
As part of participating in the show, you were asked to help volunteer as a gallery attendant during the show (i.e. greet visitors, answer questions and ring up sales). During one of the quiet times, I snapped some photos of the gallery in a ‘walking tour’ fashion of the art show.
One of the best things about volunteering at the show was meeting the other artists who also had works on display. You were able to ask them questions about their art and techniques and also be able to share your insights about your own art works. And being new to the art scene in the Saanich Peninsula, this was a great opportunity for me to meet other artists!
